In 1989, Matti Alahuhta, a y oun g mana g er from an obscure and s p rawlin g Finnish concern called Nokia, took a year off to contem p late the followin g q uestion:how can a medium—sized com p an y overtake its bi g rivals to domin-ate a hi g h—technolo g y industr y?
At the end of his sabbatical he p roduced a dissertation that said,y es,it was indeed p ossible for smaller com p anies to con q uer the world.
W hat the y needed was a new tech-nolo g y — somethin g that chan g ed the rules of the g ame,turnin g all com p anies,no matter how bi g,into be g inners.
As it ha pp ened,j ust such a technolo g y was startin g to make itself felt:the mo-bile p hone.
Electronics g iants, includin g Motorola, Ericsson,Siemens,Phili p s and Alcatel, rushed into the market.
The y had vast scale,ex p erience, distribution networks and research and de-velo p ment facilities.
Nokia — smaller, more focused, nimbler — defeated them all.
