嘲笑美国邻居的无知（趣味英语）

对加拿大人来说，同美国人交谈时，有时最难办的事是如何忍住不笑。
但是加拿大电视节目主持人里克·默瑟在美国旅行时，当他问那些精明的美国人一些有关加拿大的简单问题时，却终于忍住了，没有捧腹大笑。
在旧金山，默瑟拿出话筒问一位女士说：“对不起，女士，偶尔您也看加拿大的电视节目吗？”
这位妇女礼貌并认真地问：“你们加拿大有电视台吗？”
事实是：有3100多万人口的加拿大有四大电视网，几十家电视台。
在波士顿，默瑟询问一位无疑来自“常青藤联盟”的大学生说：“你认为加拿大应该加入北美吗？这可是远在北方的一个大问题。愿意就此发表点看法吗？”
这位声称自己是研究政治的大学生注视着镜头深沉地回答，对此他还不十分有把握。
事实是：加拿大显然是北美大陆的一部分，而且是很大的一部分。
默瑟又问另外一个美国人：“加拿大应该从法律上禁止在多伦多捕杀北极熊吗？”
回答是：当然应该！
事实是：根本就没有北极熊会在这个繁华的湖畔大都市游荡。北极熊生活在多伦多以北1500英里的北极地区。
唉，加拿大！美国人对你知之甚少啊！这个美国最大的贸易伙伴，也是与之共享不设防漫长边界的唯一国家。然而不知什么原因，美国教室里挂的地图总是将再往北的那一大块土地切去。
默瑟说：“加拿大人有一种身份危机。我们看上去像美国人，说话听上去像美国人。我们了解美国人的一切，而他们对我们一无所知。对此，我们感到很可笑。”
两年前的某一天，默瑟正站在国会山前。不知从哪里走来一位政治家，默瑟拦住他问：“先生，对不起，你知道加拿大新总理拉尔夫·邦梅吉正在华盛顿同克林顿总统举行会晤吗？”
这位政治家马上喋喋不休地大谈他对“邦梅吉总理”访问华盛顿感到非常高兴，根本不知道让·克雷蒂安是加拿大总理。
后来，默瑟遇到了当时的总统候选人布什。他冲着布什的竞选站喊道：“请允许我代表加拿大问一个问题！”他告诉布什，“波蒂宁总理”支持他竞选总统。
镜头中的布什说：“我很感谢他的支持。他知道，加拿大人是坚强的，我们将会密切合作。”（美国《国际先驱论坛报》）

Fact:Canada　has　four　ma j or　television　networks　and　dozens　of　stations　in　a　count y　of　more　than　31　million　p eo p le．
Mercer　walks　u p　to　an　unsus p ectin g　Iv y　Lea g ue　student　in　Boston　and　asks:“Do　y ou　think　Canada　should　j oin　North　America?It's　a　bi g　stor y　u p　north．Care　to　comment?”
The　universit y　student,who　sa y s　he　is　stud y in g　p olitics,looks　dee p l y　into　the　camera　and　answers,seriousl y,that　he　is　not　q uite　sure．
Fact:Canada　obviousl y　is　a　p art——a　ver y　lar g e　part——of　the　North　American　continent．
Another　American,another　q uestion:“Should　Canada　outlaw　the　slau g hter　of　p olar　bears　in　Toronto?”
Answer:Definitel y！
Fact:There　are　no　p olar　bears　on　the　loose　in　this　bustlin g,urban　cit y　on　a　lake．Polar　bears　roam　in　the　Arctic,about　1,500　miles　north　of　Toronto．
O　Canada！How　little　Americans　know　thee．　The　United　States'　bi gg est　tradin g　p artner,the　onl y　countr y　with　which　it　shares　a　lon g,un g uarded　border．　Yet　somehow　that　lar g e　landmass　to　the　north　was　alwa y s　cut　off　the　ma ps　that　hun g　in　U．S．　classrooms．
Mercer　said,“Canadians　have　an　identit y　crisis．We　look　like　Americans．We　sound　like　Americans．We　know　ever y thin g　about　Americans．The y　know　nothin g　about　us．We　find　that　funn y．”
Mercer　was　standin g　in　front　of　the　Ca p itol　one　da y　two　y ears　a g o．And　out　of　nowhere,a　p olitician　walked　b y．Mercer　sto pp ed　him:“Excuse　me,sir,did　y ou　know　Canada's　new　p rime　minister,Ral p h　Benmer g ui,is　visitin g　Washin g ton　for　a　summit　with　p resident　Clinton?”
Immediatel y　the　p olitician　be g an　ramblin g　on　how　ha ppy　he　was　that　“Prime　Minister　Benmer g ui”　was　in　Washin g ton．Never　mind　that　the　Prime　Minister　is　Jean　Chretien．
Later,Mecer　cau g ht　u p　with　Geor g e　W．Bush,then　a　presidential　candidate,“A　q uestion　from　Canada！”Mercer　shouted　at　a　Bush　cam p ai g n　sto p．Mercer　told　Mr．Bush　that　“Prime　Minister　Poutine”was　su pp ortin g　the　Bush　candidac y．
Mr．Bush,on　camera,said:“I　a p－p reciate　his　stron g　statement．He　understands　Canadians　are　stron g　and　we'll　work　closel y　to g ether．”
